Grant Writing
I’ve formed a new grant writing team! Our team is made up of Dan Sherven, Mitch Sherven, and myself. We are three experienced grant writers and published authors. Our detailed resumes are attached for your review and consideration. I have been involved with NAIHC and in general, in Indian country since 1998. We also tapped to reviewers to help us ensure we send a powerful, native message to these potential funders. Reviewers include Cora Gaane (former Wells Fargo Foundation executive) and Moriah McGill (who has secured nearly $200 million in grant funding over her career).
Contractor’s duties and responsibilities:
To research, identify and to present potential funding sources in the government, corporate or foundation sector – for your approval. Working with your staff, we would draft, finalize and then submit the completed grant or project funding. We use the Foundation Directory Online/Candid, and artificial intelligence (AI-based) search platforms to research potential funders and supporters.
Compensation:
Diehl & Co. LLC would be the contracting organization and would bill time and expenses as incurred based on a 1/10 of an hour increment, on a monthly basis. Our standard billing rate is below most grant writing organizations. Our success rate is unmatched.
Cost estimate:
It is impossible to estimate the range of costs, which are necessarily dependent on the amount of time invested by our team as offset by the time invested by your staff. However, when a funding source and/or program is approved by your organization, a best-guess cost in terms of a dollar range shall be estimated.
Topic areas for a letter agreement or contract to be considered for further negotiation:
Specific responsibilities of individual team members for both teams; invoice payment terms; weekly meeting schedule; contract terms and conditions – including termination, dispute resolution and other contractual clauses.

Dan Sherven – Grant Lead
Dan Sherven is the author of four books, including the number one bestseller Classified: Off the Beat ‘N Path and Uncreated Light. Sherven is also an award-winning journalist, writing for several publications.
In addition to his work at SaskGrants, Dan also writes grants for consulting firms as an independent contractor; with particular experience in the non-profit and arts sectors. Sherven has worked in public relations for the provincial government as a writer and researcher—with much of that work having a bio-technology focus. Dan has also worked in digital media as an investigative journalist. Sherven holds a Bachelors of Philosophy and a Bachelors of Journalism.
Mitchell Sherven – Grant Consultant
Mitch has several years of experience conducting in-depth research, editing, and writing digital media. Mitch holds a Bachelors of Arts in History, and he is currently writing his first book, on Canadian history and religion. Mitch also recently edited a fiction book which was internationally published.
Beyond his work at SaskGrants, Mitch has worked as a Teaching Assistant, and currently writes grants for a consulting firm in the United States. Mitch has written for charities, non-profits, and artists to support their missions.
Joseph B. Diehl – Production, Research and Delivery
Joseph B. Diehl CPA JD FMCHC serves as the Managing Director of Diehl & Co. LLC, a Seattle-based consulting, coaching and fundraising organization. Joe brings over five decades in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, beginning at the entry level and eventually becoming an accomplished senior level executive and CFO. The first half of his career was invested in accounting and finance – in the for-profit sector.
The second half of his career was dedicated to nonprofits and helping people. After graduating from Northern Illinois University in 1971, Joe became a CPA and enrolled in UIC-Law, passing the Illinois Bar Exam in 1979. He also is a Functional Medicine coach (FMCHC). He has worked in housing in Indian country from 1998 to the present day.
Finally, corporate givers and foundations have hit new highs in the amount of investable assets. Just as an example, attached is an overview of the S&P 500 stock market performance since the turn of the century. Before the recession hits, and if for some reason – you are not tapping into these war chests, you will allow other causes to utilize these funds that will NOT go to you.
